The Strandja Mountains are an extensive mountain range. Only their north-eastern section lies in Bulgaria while the rest of the mountains lie in Turkey. The highest peak on Bulgarian territory is Golyamo Gradishte (710 m). The mountains are not very high but they offer a fine scenery. Large areas are covered with oak and beech trees. The Mediterranean influence is felt in this area and wild olive, fig and plane trees, cypresses, pomegranates and box are also to be found here. There are also lots of rare flowers and herbs. The mountains are the habitat of deer, wild boar, hares and wild cats.
The ancients called these mountains ”Praoria” - mountain on the border. In the heart of the mountains there are remains of prehistoric tombs, ruins of ancient fortresses and temples and medieval monasteries.
